Oben Abright

Austin Art Projects is the exclusive representative for Oben Abright. One of the most exciting and innovative young artists to watch, Abright was born in 1980 and grew up in San Anselmo, California. The son of artists, he spent his early years drawing, painting and making clay sculpture in his parent’s studio. While still in high school he enrolled in drawing and painting classes at the College of Marin, where his father is head of the ceramics program. After graduation he traveled and studied at the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute of Art of Florence. In January 2000 he began his study at The California College of Arts in Oakland, CA where he studied drawing, painting, ceramic sculpture and glass blowing. He received his BFA in Glass in May of 2004. Oben's mold blown cast glass sculpture often draws inspiration from ordinary people near where he lives and maintains a studio in Oakland, California.

The Curator's Eye - Diablo Magazine

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the studio glass movement, Oakland Museum of California curator Julie Muñiz sought classic pieces to show how the movement evolved. She also sought pieces to illustrate the medium’s diverse magnificence.

“Glass is a magical, mesmerizing medium,” says Muñiz. “It can be beautiful, and it can be raw. It can look like metal, and it can look like water. I wanted to showcase this diversity and also to highlight pioneering artists together with next-generation artists.”
